It was serendipitous that the first ever Daybreaker I attended in Washington, DC was the same weekend as the first ever Women’s March in the winter of 2017. In a span of two days, I was awestruck by the way our community came together to uplift and empower. I remember feeling an overwhelming sense of hope because I had found my tribe. A tribe consisting of beautiful humans who were willing to connect, inspire, and engage through the freedom of dance. I could feel the energy pumping through my veins and the muscles working in my body. In unison, with the musical beats, we were artists painting on the same canvas, creating one magnificent work that dared not to stay inside the lines.
Drenched in sweat as the event came to a close, I remember sitting quietly on the floor listening to the words of local poets and change makers. With my head bowed, exhausted and content, I felt proud of my city. Proud to know there were people willing to move for one another and willing to open their hearts to equality.
Each Daybreaker I have been to since, there are new and fresh concepts to keep us on our dancing toes. Yet, it has never lost that deep sense of community that truly provides the fulfilment. I see familiar faces, hug old friends, and occupy the similar spot right next to the DJ that I always do. And in the early hours of the morning as the sun rises and the light shines through, we dance to break the day.
Thank you, Daybreaker, for giving me a sense of belonging and an opportunity to share the joy that comes with dance. There is nothing quite like it.
With love & mischief,
// Joanna
